Apple Demos New Final Cut Pro X

Apple just recently demoed a new version of Final Cut Pro dubbed Final Cut Pro X. As a Final Cut Pro user since version 1.0, I am extremely interested in where Apple is taking the next version of their video production software. I wasn’t disappointed in what I saw.

The biggest new features look to be the time-saving measures that Apple has added:

  • Final Cut Pro X will be a 64-bit program now. This means a LOT more RAM can be dedicated to tasks that Final Cut Pro X will be handling. Before, we were limited to 4GB of RAM, now it is virtually limitless.
  • Rendering is now a background task. Since I have been using Final Cut Pro since day 1, I am quite familiar with the render bar. That thing is gone now. FCP will render while I continue with other edits. Beautiful!
  • Multi-core machines will be better utilized. Apple has added better support for multi-core machines so that every available CPU cycle can be tapped into. I imagine this is one of the ways they are able to do so much background processing.
  • Final Cut Pro X has features of the other Final Cut Studio applications built right in. Part of the demo showed color correction on just parts of an image (Color). Sound editing has been greatly enhanced (Soundtrack Pro). Apple even pulled in some of the hovering effects that have become famous from their implementation in iMovie.

While there is still more to be released about the next version of Final Cut Pro X, It is obvious that Apple has gone above and beyond to prepare for the future of Post-Production Video Editing.
